LINN DSM

So what is a DSM?

Well it's basically a single box solution that will allow you to play any sound source you have in your home whether it be music, film or games. DSM players have multiple inputs including HDMi, Toslink, Spdif and analogue so you can connect anything you already own.

You can sit on the sofa with an ipad looking at youtube or listening to Spotify and the sound will come through your HiFi. Films played from your PC/mac ... the sound will come through your HiFi! PS3/Xbox ... the sound will play through your HiFi. Browse your music on any control through almost any tablet/phone ipad/itouch/android/windows and play in as many rooms as you like in party mode (SONGCAST)

To cut to the chase ... Anything you can think up in your head that you want to do with sound from your home products on or off the network can now be done :)

An ordinary LINN DS will at the moment play any media from your music library direct or using the inbuilt virtual soundcard on an accompanying PC or Mac (from 11 Nov) it will play Spotify, Youtube, film, games or any other sound which would otherwise come through your computer.

So why LINN DSM. The *New* DSM product range just simplifies everything, incorporates all of your existing home products directly through digital inputs including HDMi. You can plug in your PS3, XBox, Sky-digibox, Blur-Ray-player, TV, Popcorn hour or any other products with a digital output you may have at home. It will even distribute analogue inputs, for example your prised Record player, digitally through your network so you can enjoy them across the house.

Now for some tecknical information Q & A session!

Q: What does a KDSM consist of internally?
A: A slightly modified KDS board plus an analogue volume-control/pre-amplifier (the same one as KK) and a chip-set to cope with HDMi. Note that the DSM does not process the HDMi signal but rather just takes out the channels of sound it wants from that signal which still requires a chip-set. The Akurate product is exactly the same but based on ADS+AK+chip-set.

Q: When using Songcast does the KDSM still use the anolougue pre-amp?
A: No! You select the options in 'LINN Konfig'' program and the volume will be then controlled through the DAC system & the analogue pre-amp will be in OFF mode.

Q: Will a KDSM sound as good as my KDS + KK for music alone?
A: Ultimately no but very close. Early reports are at the difference when ''no input'' is used on the DSM is that it is extremely close and if anything is just a slightly colder sound. With each input used you introduce more 'noise' into the system. Even with all inputs used it is still a super performing music system but for those music enthusiasts that will not compromise it is KDS + KK that delivers the ultimate in performance.

Q: Does my DSM stream film as well as music?
A: No! It as any DS streams any file format for music including the highest 24 Bit 192 Hz but does not stream film. It simply plucks out the sound from the digital HDMi signal or plays directly though the other digital inputs.

Q: What's the minimalist system I can have with my DSM?
A: Samsung 8 series 'smart tv' with KDSM & Aktiv Klimax speakers does everything you can think of. DNLA on your TV streams film from a local server (hard disk), the integrated browser plays Spotify, Youtube & with my favourite app 'ORB' allows remote access to your home server for Film (HD), Music (24 bit) & photo's. Of course a games consol like PS3 is also fun and a secondary access point to the internet, streaming film .....

Q: Can I integrate my DSM with 5:1 system?
A: Yes! The DSM at the moment plucks the left & right channels from your HDMi signal and lets the rest of the HDMi signal just pass through to your 5:1 processor/amp/speakers

Q: Do I want a DSM?
A: Yes ... I do! :)

Q: Will my DS7DSM show up as an airplay device so everything is completely wireless?
A: Soon it will!

Q: How much do they cost?

The above products are probably familiar to you, Samsung 8 TV, Apple computer with Bluetooth keyboard & mouse (Tips, try 'Insomnia' enabling your macbook to function with the lid down) and of course PS3. Each product allows film streaming playback and internet access ... this is daily life for most of us but frankly most of us have no idea of the potential of the products we already own! The above products can provide amazing film & music experiences in the home with your LINN DSM (1 box + speakers)

Examples:

... do you browse the internet on your Samsung 8 TV, stream films (DNLA function) from a NAS or the internet with your TV ... Spotify, Youtube? Did you know this can be controlled with an APP on your iPad?
... is your PS3 even on your home network, do you use it for blueray, internet browsing or streaming films?
... are all your products connected (virtually or physically) to your LINN system (which should be on the same network) allowing you to experience the best possible sound performance from your investments.

LINN's promise is to make any better in the home sound better and LINN DSM delivers just that ... for any product in the home.

Peoples & Schmidt can teach you about the products you own, install or stabilise your network and allow products to integrate with each other so you get the best from your investment. Book a consultation in your own home with us *NOW* :) martin@peoplesandschmidt.com

MORE ABOUT DSM (SWEDISH TEXT)

Bra!!

My first impression of LINN's NEW Akubarik's

Firstly I am all in favour of compact systems so for me it's a great advantage that they are fully active. Technical information you can get from the designer on the following video link http://vimeo.com/search?q=akubarik I can pick a few points about the design. I don't like blue lights ... I'd hoped it would be smaller to fit more of my customers that have smaller rooms and apartments with neighbours. But actualythey look great, very tidy indeed. A good start and very interesting but how do they perform? The obvious reference systems are Akurate 242 Aktiv with LINN Akurate amps or Klimax 350A's reference speakers. Straight off the Akurate 242's can't compete on the bottom end. The Akubariks deliver controlled base no matter the volume. Whether the 3k array performs better than on aktive 242, I don't know but it's probably quite similar. It is very good. It's all very good and well balanced. At no point did I experience any issues with frequ

It's that time again ... Vinyl fabriken färdigt, Linn shop påbörjat ... nu kör vi :)

Visit the LINN factory with us
